Deli meats made at a Boar’s Head plant in Jarratt, Virginia, have been tied to a listeria outbreak that has killed nine people and hospitalized 57 others so far.
The hospitalizations have happened across 18 states and there have been deaths in New Jersey, New York, Virginia, Florida, Tennessee, New Mexico, Illinois and South Carolina. The CDC has called it “the largest listeriosis outbreak” since 2011.
According to news reports, samples in multiple states taken from unopened products from the Boar’s Head plant have been found to be contaminated with the bacteria.
Inspectors have also turned up multiple violations at the Boar’s Head plant, including finding mold, mildew and insects repeatedly throughout the site.
Boar’s Head issued a recall last month after deli meats made at the plant were tied to the listeria outbreak.
