More than two million MamaRoo swings and 220,000 RockaRoo rockers were recalled following the asphyxiation death of a 10-month-old infant who became tangled in a restraint strap that hangs underneath the devices.
The Mamaroo recall and Rockaroo recall over the entanglement and strangulation hazard was announced by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Pittsburgh-based Thorley Industries, which does business under the company name 4moms.
If your child was injured or died due to strangulation or injury caused by a MamaRoo or RockaRoo swing or rocker, you may have grounds for a lawsuit.
Kline & Specter, PC, with more than 50 attorneys, including five doctor/lawyers – the most in the nation – has the experience and expertise to handle complex product liability litigation, having won verdicts and settlements totaling in the billions of dollars. The law firm handles cases nationwide and offers free case evaluations.
The 4moms swings and rockers can create a hazard not when an infant is placed in the device but if the child crawls underneath, where a strap hangs loosely and can entangle a baby. The company had received a report of the fatality involving the MamaRoo swing and a case in which another 10-month-old suffered became entangled in the swing’s strap and suffered bruises but was rescued by a caregiver before further harm.
No incidents were reported involving the RockaRoo rockers but the CPSC noted it presents a similar hazard because of its restraint strap that hangs loosely below the device.
Recall of the MamaRoo baby swing, which can be set to multiple motions and speeds, includes only those models (located on the bottom of the unit) that use a three-point harness: versions 1.0 and 2.0 (model number 4M-005), version 3.0 (model number 1026), and version 4.0 (model number 1037). The RockaRoo rocker that was recalled has the model number 4M-012 on the bottom of the unit, the CPSC said.
The products were sold between 2010 and August 2022 at BuyBuy Baby and Target stores and online at 4moms.com and on Amazon.
The CPSC advised that people with infants who can crawl immediately stop using the recalled swings and rockers and place them away from children. It noted also that consumers can contact 4moms to get a free strap fastener that will prevent the strap from extending under the swing when not in use.
